Alfred Rowing Club News
The 27th of March saw the rowing of the 162nd Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity Boat Race. Cambridge men won by two and a half lengths and Oxford women won comfortably over Cambridge women, who survived an almost sinking, to complete the race in a determined show of courage and effort. If you missed it you would do well to watch the BBC clip of the race.
Every year to mark this event Cape Coastal invite Alfred RC to race against them on the boat race day. This year due to weather the race was moved to the 28th when fair weather prevailed and a great days racing was enjoyed. Alfred women won against CCR and for the second year CCR men beat Alfred. Alfred junior crews combined with Grassy Park and held off the Alfred second crew for a comfortable win. Drinks and a braai at the FBYC finished off a wonderful day.
Alfred RC and Grassy Park will be attending SA Championships at the end of April so training and crew selection is underway.
Autumn sailing on Sunday, no formal racing or junior training. Tuck shop open both Saturday and Sunday from 09h00 to 12h00.

A great chance to sail at Swartvlei and as the RS Tera is mostly a feeder into the Laser class it would be great to have some “big brothers/sisters” on the water.
All welcome and there are cash prizes for the Open fleet too.
False Bay Nature Reserve Birdathon Walk – Saturday 16th April 2016
BirdLife South Africa, the Cape Bird Club and the City of Cape Town will be hosting the fourth annual False Bay Nature Reserve Birdathon: Fun Walk and Festival on the 16th April 2016 at the False Bay Nature Reserve. The Fun Walk approach will once again have a continuous start from 08h00 – 09h30; as participants arrive they can immediately register and begin walking; allowing participants to slow down and enhance their learning experience during the walk. Whilst the Bird Festival component (from 09h00 – 13h00) will include many of the favourite exhibitors, such as Eagle Encounters, the Cape Reptile Association and “carnival”-like atmosphere at the picnic area on the Eastern Shore of Zeekoevlei.
