Dear Sailors and Friends,
Obituaries
2016 has not been a good year for the club so far. We have recently lost some great members. It is with sadness that we inform you of Barry Barbour’s passing on Sunday 31st January. Barry had been ill for sometime now and moved on peacefully on Sunday evening. Barry’s funeral/memorial date has not been announced yet and we will let you know as soon as possible. Barry, as you know, was an Olympic sailor in the Flying Dutchman Class and a champion Finn sailor.
Beva Runciman (mother of Alex) passed away a couple of weeks ago.
Condolences to the families.
LAST WEEKEND
Summer series round 2 continued with a fleet of 8 boats. Congratulations Neil Armitage the winner, and we welcomed the Zeekoevlei Sailing Centre who sailed a sonnet in the racing.
Almost 30 kids on the water today at Junior Training! We got 9 new sailors on the simulator to do some land sailing. Then on the water with a saftey rope! Intermediates were improving their skills – they’re almost there to start racing regattas! The A fleet has also grown this term. They’re training hard as 2 of them have made the SA team to sail Optimist World’s & Africa’s
A great day sailing!
Alfred Rowing Club News!
Well done to Brian Christie and Richard Moolenschot on their victory at VLC in Joburg over the weekend! They came home with 2 gold medals each!! And congratulations to ARC member, Celina Gruber, who won 2 of her events! Here is a piece from Brian:
“We entered two events: the Masters first 2X and Masters 8, where we combined with six Vikings (they wanted us for our age!). We had a very tough row in the 2X, it was one of those rows that just didn’t flow and we were both blown at the end. Beaten by Bakker VLC and Meyer Vikings. We had particularly wanted to beat the Meyer crew, but they took us by a length. We won on handicap, however. We were a division older than Meyer, and the Bakker crew averaged 51. Lots younger than us. The 8 was a great row, well stroked by Nic Meyer, who took it up to about 38 for the finish. We finished a length behind Wemmer, but were well ahead on handicap. VLC is a well organised and structured regatta and we were very kindly hosted by Vikings and by Ravens, who freely lent us their boats. It is worth considering for next year.
Brian ”
