Story Waves: Tales & Talks from Zeekoevlei
Don’t miss our next instalment of Story Waves at the Zeekoevlei Yacht Club on Friday, 30 May 2025.
18h30 meet and mingle
Justin Fox will be in conversation with Liesl Jobson in the Upper Deck about the influence of the sea on his writing and about his latest release, the novel Hell Run Tobruk. The discussion starts promptly at 19h00.
About the talk
Having grown up around boats, the sea became an essential part of – and passion informing – most of Justin’s writing. He will share how this influenced the writing of Getaway travel assignments on yachts, dhows, catamarans, square-riggers and ships; five novels about the sea; and his wave-inspired poetry.
Hell Run Tobruk is the third book in the thrilling Jack Pembroke series, each of which is a stand-alone story. It tells the story of the desperate struggle of South African forces in North Africa during 1942, especially ships sent from Simon’s Town to fight in the Mediterranean.
About the author
Justin Fox is an immensely talented and well known novelist, travel writer, photographer and poet. Adept at reading the wind, leaning into gravity, and balancing through space, it is unsurprising that his creative endeavours bear the trademark metaphors, rhythm and technical skill of the sailor and the poetic grace of a surfer.
Justin is a Rhodes Scholar with a doctorate in English from Oxford University and has taught part time at the University of Cape Town for two decades. Until 2020, he was the editor of Getaway magazine. In 2024, Justin’s literary travelogue, Place, was shortlisted for both the Sunday Times Literary Award and the South African Literary Award. He is currently an artist in residence at the University of Johannesburg.
