ZVYC News 6 October 2016

Dear Sailors, Rowers and Friends,

Laser Nationals – SwartVlei
Well done to all who took part. Fantastic entry with the biggest entry in over 10 years – 66 entries (across the 3 fleets) in total. Contrary to popular belief, it was a windy regatta, with consistent breeze; the lightest weather race 14knts and the strongest 28knts but majority of races sailed between 14 and 18knts.
4.7 Class – 12 entries: National Champion Cullen Keytel, 1st
Radial Class – 36 entries: Asenathi Jim, (1st); Dylan Long (3rd); Sarah-Jane Deary (7th, and first lady); Sonja Stock; Elsje Dijkstra; Ken Holliday (2nd GGM); Aubrey Price; Patrick Jackson
Standard Class – 17 entries: National Champion Alistair Keytel (1st); Alan Keen (4th); Pete Wilson (5th); Lance Burger; Ralph Thomas

Alfred Rowing Club News
Alfred RC has started the new season with enthusiasm which has seen a good turn out at the club training sessions at 07:30 on Weekends and the new early bird midweek session at 06:00 on Wednesdays. The vlei is looking fantastic and getting onto the water early in the morning is a privilege. The focus at the moment is on preparation for the Knysna Midway Regatta which will be held on the 15th & 16th October. Alfred RC will be taking an Eights crew to row in this event. With the increasedinterest in Masters Rowing we will compete against Buffalo and Port Elizabeth Rowing Clubs who have entered masters crews. Rowing as a sport has received a major boost with the success of the crews who competed in the Olympic Games in Rio and Rowing South Africa has secured an amazing sponsorship from Rand Merchant Bank. The wonderful adverts with the theme “Pulling together” have raised the profile of the sport and this has had a positive impact at all levels of rowing. Rowing is a low impact sport that develops overall muscle tone and fitness and we are always looking out for new members as it is never to late to learn to row. If anyone is interested please make enquiries through the club or the rowing club website alfredrowing.co.za.
Cheers
Captain Kirk (Gavin)
