ZVYC News 23 July 2015

Dear Sailors and Friends,

The Qingdao Sailors have been selected as per the mail from SAS:

22 July 2015
Dear WC Clubs, Classes and Sailors
INVITATION – QINGDAO INTERNATIONAL MARINE FESTIVAL 2015
At the beginning of July we received an invitation from the Chinese Yachting Association to participate in the International Shandong Sailing Week taking place from 7 – 17 August 2015, which included both dinghy and keel boat sailing. The basis of this invitation is an agreement between the Provincial Government of the Western Cape and the Shandong Province. SASWC then signed a “Sailing Cooperation Agreement” with Qingdao Sailing Centre – the centre which trains China’s Olympic Squad.
The SAS WC ExCo and DCAS (Provincial Department of Sports) agreed that a delegation, representative of the demographics of the Province will be selected to represent sailing at this prestigious event. We further agreed that as far as is possible, DCAS will provide most of the funding. We are happy to announce that DCAS has made a grant of R100,000 available for this event.
SASWC then went on a public call to all clubs and have received over 60 applications from both dinghy and keel boat sailors. Given the limited budget and the fact that dinghy sailors are back at school – the ExCo resolved to send a team of keel boat sailors representing our Province, competing in the “Bondex Logistics Cup” Qingdao International Regatta 2015 from 12 – 16 August 2015. The team is as follows :-
Sieraj Jacobs (ZVYC) Helm/Manager
Heidi Burger (UCT/RCYC) Piano/Halyards
Daniel Agulhas (ZVSC/ RCYC Academy) Foredeck
Theo Yon (HBYC) Trimmer
Paul Vivian (RCYC) Trimmer
SAS WC, represented by Mr Saths Moodley will be attending the Qingdao Opening Ceremony between 6 – 8 August 2015 and will be negotiating future Agreements with Qingdao to include exchange programmes for other classes. You are all invited to email suggestions in this regard before 31 July 2015, eg. youth class exchanges should not to take place during WP school term, etc. We hope that international exchanges become an annual event in the SAS WC Calendar.
We wish our Western Cape Province team well and look forward to following them on the SAS WC Facebook page.
Regards to all

LIPTON CUP 2015 on Table Bay- The ZVYC Team Report
Our training started mid June where we started getting use to the boat and introducing the team members that haven’t done much keel-boating to the world of L26 sailing. We did a few sessions with Dave Hudson, who was kind enough to coach us and share his L26 expertise with us. Our first regatta was the Youth regatta, which went really well. We came 5th overall in a fleet of 9 boats.
We trained hard and dieted hard the following week, leading up to L26 Nationals, which is probably why we didn’t perform as well that weekend. It was a long, hard weekend of racing and all of us were pushed to the limit of our sailing and mental capabilities!
We took the week leading up to Lipton easier. The team went for one practice sail, but mainly just worked on getting our weight down and doing some final boat maintenance. This meant that we were a lot more prepared for Sunday’s racing.
One major change that we did at the start of Lipton was to swap myself (Heidi) and Nicola. Nicola moved from helm to upwind trimmer and I moved to helming. We probably should of done this from the start, but at least now we’ve learnt both jobs. We do better in the breeze, while light wind isn’t our strongest area. It was unfortunately a light wind regatta, so the Vaal girls managed to just beat us overall by one position. We were happy with our progress though and managed to move up two positions on the score board in the last race of the regatta. We beat most of the other new teams.
We’d like to thank Tiletoria, The Design Company, One Eighty, Vida e Caffe, ZVYC and our fantastic managers: Markus Progli and Nic Baigrie for all the support! We took this year as a training year and had an fantastic regatta! We will be back next year in full force, aiming for a top 5 position!
Kind regards,
Heidi, Nicola, Gail, Nina, Courtnay, Cathryn and Robyn
